I love it when teams play their starters in the preseason. Because we go towards the regular season and we get excited about certain teams. Even certain players, it’s exciting to see the players we want to watch most, play into the regular season. One of the teams who played their starters the most snaps is the Jacksonville Jaguars. Trevor Lawrence has gotten a lot of snaps and a lot of people believe he is really coming into his own. Now this year, adding Calvin Ridley there is a lot of excitement of what this offense has the potential to be. This preseason is no different.

I love seeing Calvin Ridley making plays as we know he can over the course of the year. But I still want to see Trevor Lawrence taking those small strides in terms of making the layups because he is capable of doing them. Really wasn’t any big plays in the game, everything else was short. Play the game and play every single play the defense is going to give you.

Every year and game, he is making strides. With Trevor Lawrence growing over the year and Calvin Ridley, watch out. It could be a fun watch in Jacksonville. #jacksonvillejaguars #nfl #trevorlawrence

I think the Jets are going to have the chance to be really good in the AFC if they can get protection for Aaron Rodgers.
It’s almost that time! Regular season is about ready to start so we got to see our last bit of preseason action before the regular season and we got a chance to see Aaron Rodgers with the New York Jets. We have all been waiting for it. Thought to dive into it and see where the Jets are as these guys have to play more together but some really good things we saw in the last Jets preseason game.
So fun to see Aaron Rodgers out there and you see him dealing the ball. A lot of issues up front that I don’t know how it’s going to play but the Giants kind of played into their hands letting Aaron get the ball out quickly. I believe that’s going to be a big part of what they do. Anytime Aaron can find that RPO throw, with the now or fade in the redzone, they are going to allow him to do that. Find ways to get the ball out quickly and move with purpose. Wasn’t a lot of fancy stuff but it was managing the game and getting the ball to the playmakers. Add in the play action and naked bootlegs, I think the Jets are going to have the chance to be really good in the AFC if they can get protection for Aaron Rodgers. #aaronrodgers #nyjets #nfl

There’s going to be growing pains for a young QB that hasn’t played, but there’s been some really good things that leave me optimistic that he’s going to play some really good football this year, even if he has some bumps in the road.

Another storyline that we’re all paying attention to this year is going to be Jordan love and the Green Bay Packers. Aaron Rodgers gone…oh my gosh, Jordan Love hasn’t played…what’s he going to be as a quarterback? Is he ready? I’m hearing all kinds of different reports he’s having a bad day…oh, he can’t play the game. I’ve already broken down his one start from last year and I thought he played really well. But hey, one start doesn’t determine everything…I want to see him a different kind of game situations. So thought I’d put together a few different throws from week one and week two this preseason, because he’s got some good time in the preseason. Let’s take a look at what we’ve seen from Jordan Love so far in the preseason are up to this point, having not yet seen him in the regular season, but maybe project forward whether we think he’s really got a chance or where there’s some of those reports that that he’s not ready to play are accurate…let’s go to the tape.

Regular season is a different beast than preseason. Teams do more vanilla things against you. They don’t game plan against you…for you they don’t understand what your strengths and weaknesses are. I understand all that. All we can do is go off of what we’ve seen up to this point. Everybody talking about practices and all that stuff…I’m gonna go on game tape. I’m going off his start last year, where he played really well…you can go back here on YouTube and find that tape if you want see what he did in his start last year. I’m going to go off of the two preseason games this year…what have we seen? He led his team to two touchdowns in each of the games, even though he played a limited amount of time.

More importantly, where are his eyes at…what is he looking at? What is he seeing? Is he seeing the key things on the different concepts that he needs to see? No, he didn’t make every throw…no he didn’t complete every throw. Not the most important thing. I do believe there’s some technique stuff I’d like to see him clean up a little bit…but how definitive he was…getting back, seeing it, eyes in the right spot…ball out. Pretty accurate for the most part when his feet were set…good on the naked bootlegs. Just like what I’ve seen up to this point. It doesn’t guarantee us anything, but very seldom do you see guys that do certain things like this week after week after week that don’t know what they’re doing…they’re just falling into this kind of success. Probably still going to be some growing pains…there’s growing pains for every quarterback. There were growing pains for Aaron Rodgers in his first year before he became the Aaron Rodgers that we know. So there’s going to be growing pains for a young quarterback that hasn’t played. All I’m telling you is that when you watch the tape, there’s been some really really good things that leave me optimistic that he’s going to play some really good football this year, even if he has some bumps in the road. #greenbaypackers #nfl #jordanlove

A lot of scrutiny about him over the past couple of years. He signs the big contract, critics asking questions. I get it, I have questions myself. But I believe Brian Daboll understands the strengths of him, and Jones can be a good player in the NFL. Is he elite? Not yet. But I watch him get better and better. I’m excited to see what Daniel Jones can be and I see that preseason game number 2 could be a glimpse of what we can see.
Back on Studyball another week of preseason! Beautiful thing about this is we are starting to see our normal players in the games. It’s fun to start breaking them down. Today, I am going to take a look at Daniel Jones.
You see why I like the fit with Daboll and Jones. Those two are really good for the scheme they are running. They could be a better team even after last year. They believe they have a great chance with their guys, especially with Jones at quarterback.

Some stuff to really like from the first showing of Russell Wilson and Sean Payton together. I thought he looked much more comfortable than he did last year. Now they cleaned up the system, split the field, giving him more chances down the field. The pass concepts were more pure progression type stuff, instead of having to read the whole field. He had a bit of an up and down start as we all expected. We heard some really good things out of camp, but we saw some deficiencies technically coming out of Florida and those things showed up in the first preseason game.

Back here on Studyball and earlier in the week, we took a look at the top two quarterbacks taken in the draft: Bryce Young, CJ Stroud. Today, let’s get into the number three quarterback taken by the Indianapolis Colts, Anthony Richardson. You see the talent and ability but you have to be able to tighten up some of the technical stuff to make the throws that he is supposed to make. But still some really good things to build off of.

Saw some really good things there. One of the things I liked was how defined he was when he knew when he wanted to make a throw. Got his feet set and got the ball out of his hands. Technique was an issue once again. That’s something he has to continue to work on and improve on because we can’t miss some of those throws he missed in this game. Have to be more accurate with his feet because that is what’s going to cause the accuracy with the ball. But I liked the decision making, thought process, the way he worked through the things we saw on tape. One of the most nervous times for any football player is going to be their first preseason game. Making the jump from college to the pros, the speed changes a bit, a lot of pressure as you’re playing for a job for the first time. This is your livelihood so naturally, there are a lot of nerves that go into it. It takes time to settle in and slow the game down. I don’t read too much into these first preseason games.

One of the first questions is always “let’s take a look at the drafted quarterbacks!” Can we see early glimpses of college success in the NFL?

Today we are looking at the top two picks in CJ Stroud and Bryce Young. We are going to dive into the small sample size that we have and just kind of see where they are at this point, just weeks before their regular season action.

You can see the game is moving a bit fast. Missing throws that they normally make in college. Things happen a bit differently, you aren’t quite as comfortable. I think they are going to come. I like to see the transition of things moving quickly, then making decisions, then knowing what to look at and getting the ball out.

It wasn’t perfect for either one of them but we saw some things we wanted to see and there are a lot of really good things for both of these guys they can build off of. #cjstroud #bryceyoung #nfl

Back here on StudyBall. Part 2. Aaron Rodgers. Let’s just dive into the tape. We saw some vintage Aaron Rodgers in the first half. Any situation around him can cause him to play differently than he normally does. And that’s what we will see for the first year with the Jets. But if all goes well, we will see the old Aaron Rodgers in New York.

So many good things in that tape with vintage Aaron Rodgers. Makes some great throws, gets the ball out on time and down the field. Yes, they were on different times and a bit off last year. Was it Aaron? Maybe, maybe not. But the lack of confidence in the guys around him may have created some sense of questions. You see it throughout the game. Dropped balls, bad technique on routes. But he continued to make the players around him better. I think it forced him to make un-Aaron Rodgers like plays. But New York, a new start. One of the biggest storylines going into this season is the New York Jets and Aaron Rodgers. Questions about Aaron Rodgers and the season that he had last year, because the numbers weren’t typical Aaron Rodgers numbers. People wondering, is he the same quarterback? Then there’s also the flipside…the excitement that if he IS the same quarterback that we’ve seen for so much of his career and with the talent around him, what are the Jets going to look like this year?! I’m excited to see the answers to those questions but let’s go back to last year and I’m going to pick a game that was memorable to me. The Packers were trying to make a run to the playoffs, playing against Miami. Everybody thought Miami was rolling into the playoffs and that they were going to be the ones that knock Green Bay out of contention for a playoff spot. I remember watching that game and thinking OK, Aaron Rodgers looks like Aaron Rodgers…so, is it the guys around him? Is it the lack of continuity, because a lot of the young guys? Has Aaron slipped a little bit in certain areas? Or was it just lack of comfort that caused him to play the game a little bit differently. So, let’s bounce into the tape and I think this will excite everybody about the upcoming season and it will definitely excite New York Jets fans…to say, okay, even though the numbers said something last year, Aaron Rodgers can still be that guy if we put the right situation around him.

I wanted to show some things like down in the red zone. Aaron Rodgers is so good in the red zone. He’s been good at creating opportunities in the past for his team. They were doing a lot of stuff last year, at least in this game, where they were trying to design specific plays to get a certain guy open…not giving Aaron a lot of options. Those guys weren’t open, so now it falls to Aaron to make plays and that was part of the issue that we saw last year. Some guys dropping passes…lack of trust I believe was part of what we saw last year. But, we see glimpses throughout this game and we’ll see it in part two, of Aaron Rodgers being Aaron Rodgers. So, he didn’t just fall off the face of the Earth or just forget how to play the game…that guy still there and I think if they put a situation around him he’s got a chance to get back to that MVP form. #aaronrodgers #nyjets #nfl

Picking back up on our Geno Smith tape in San Francisco in the playoffs last year. We saw in part one, there there were a lot of really good things by Geno. Taking the throws that were there…making a couple tough throws…not making a lot of mistakes. Just get the ball out of his hands to the right guy and trying to move the chains. Let’s get into part two and see if that continues throughout this game.
We see a lot of really good stuff here from Geno. Not making bad decisions, not forcing the football. That was really his MO all last year…then making the big plays when they were there to be made. Going through a lot of these pass plays, the Seahawks didn’t win this football game because they had trouble finishing and getting the ball in the end zone, which is really what San Francisco’s defense is all about. But Geno played another good football game…he knew what he had to do…knew he had to get the ball out of his hands against a good defense front. Know where your eyes should be…know what you’re looking at on the different plays…get the ball out…be accurate with the football. That was Geno’s story last year. Now I’m excited to see him stack years together and see if he can elevate his game just a touch, and he can elevate the guys around him and Seattle can truly become a contender in the NFC. #genosmith #seattleseahawks #nflnews
