Drew Allar is definitely not the starting quarterback on Saturday. Definitely not.

Okay, so Franklin won’t make an official announcement, but you get what’s going on here. Franklin went on to say that he wants Allar to let the game come to him and not force anything. The 6-5 quarterback has the poise and skills to be elite, but he needs to get through the first few games undefeated to get the experience Penn State needs him to have.

All eyes on Allar Saturday night.

But Allar isn’t stepping on the field alone. In fact, you heard Franklin say he wants Allar to know he doesn’t have to do it all on his own. The players that will help him? How about potential All-everything candidate Nick Singleton? Singleton’s explosive running style and violence at contact could help exploit a West Virginia defense that has four new starters in the front seven. He and Kaytron Allen will likely be the engine that makes the Penn State offense go in game one and the rest of the 2023 season.

On the opposite side of the ball, the Penn State linebackers are practicing their interception skills. West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene brings a dynamic element to his game on the ground, but he threw three interceptions in two games to end the 2022 season. If his gun-slinging ways aren’t behind him, someone on the Penn State defense could come up with the ball.

In an unfortunate update, Penn State will be without guar Landon Tengwall’s services for the remainder of the season. The third-year offensive lineman is retiring from football due to an injury.

“It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my retirement from Football. Unfortunately, I have sustained an injury that will not allow me to safely continue to play the game I love, and that has given me so much,” Tengwall announced in a statement on social media Wednesday night.

Fitz and Bauer will react to the news and explain how the team will move forward without Tengwall in a season that promised progress up front. First, they discuss what type of person Tengwall was and his impact on the program. Next, they’ll deal with the reality of replacing him in the lineup and how JB Nelson, Drew Shelton, Vega Ioane and the rest of the offensive line will change in his absence.

Penn State head coach James Franklin discussed his teams preparations for the team’s opening contest against the West Virginia Mountaineers. He gave his thoughts about what Drew Allar’s first game and what he wants the young player to do in his first game.

Penn State football takes on the West Virginia Mountaineers on Saturday in the team’s season-opening game at Beaver Stadium. To get you ready for the game, the Keystone Kickoff Show is previewing the matchup between Penn State’s defense and the West Virginia offense. Which positional battles will determine the outcome of the game on this side of the ball? We break it down in the hour-long show.

The Keystone Kickoff Show is a regional radio show in Pennsylvania that airs three times a week across multiple radio stations. Today’s show is the Wednesday edition, where Jim Galanti and I discuss Penn State football weekly. The Blue White Illustrated YouTube channel is the exclusive home of the video home of the show. Penn State defense vs. West Virginia offense

On the show, we discuss the style of the West Virginia offense and the strengths of that unit. By far, the running game for the Mountaineers is the engine that drives the offense. Here’s an excerpt from a breakdown of how that unit functions.

As you can see by the breakdown of returning players, West Virginia returns the most continuity on their team along the offensive line. By the end of the season, [Tomas] Rimic had taken the left guard job, and the combination of [Brandon] Yates and [Ja’Quay] Hubbard split the right tackle job.

This season, [Doug] Nester will kick out to tackle, and the former right tackle duo will battle to find out who starts at guard. At least from a run-game perspective, Yates was the far superior technical and athletic blocker of the two. However, Hubbard provides the team size at 322 pounds, so he’ll likely still be a factor up front.

What’s clear from watching the tape last year is that, from a run-game perspective, this group works together well. They’re not perfect, nor do they have elite talent, but they are coordinated and you must force them to make mistakes in the run game. The five players up front and [Treylan] Davis at tight end are the team’s soul.

We go deeper on the show to explain how the group meshes up front and what types of blocking schemes the team uses. We also discuss how head coach and offensive coordinator Neal Brown smartly uses different run game augmentations to keep aggressive defenses honest.

Penn State football kicked off the first week of the 2023 season with head coach James Franklin’s weekly press conference. The Nittany Lions leader sat down with the media in the Beaver Stadium press room for roughly 40 minutes on Tuesday afternoon and discussed his team’s matchup with the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Nittany Lions take the field at 7:30 on Sept. 2 in a primetime affair. Franklin’s team is the host and higher-ranked team, coming in at 7th in the country to start the year in the AP Poll.

As he typically does, Franklin outlines the players on offense and defense for the opponent that he feels will challenge his team. He cites defensive end Sean Martin and safety Aubrey Burks for the defense and the offensive line on the other side of the ball.

“Obviously, this is a regional game, which makes sense. I know college football has gotten away from regional games and regional conferences.”

“They’ve got some offensive linemen that we recruited heavily and didn’t get.”

“I would anticipate in this game that they’ll go for it on fourth down and to be a story in the game.”

Once again, Franklin fielded questions about Penn State’s starting quarterback position. So, did he reveal who won the starting competition between Drew Allar and Beau Pribula? He didn’t, but he did discuss how Allar performed during training camp.

“If there were interception decisions that would have been an interception, but he got lucky, we track those as well. He’s been really good,” Franklin said.

The other cool thing is that, having all this historical data, you can go back and compare historically. You can compare to Trace McSorley and Sean Clifford. There’s a lot of value in that. I thought he had a good camp. All his numbers were really good.”
