The LSU Tigers open up the 2023 college football season against the Florida State Seminoles at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida. It is tough to distinguish which team has the edge in this matchup; both have Heisman-caliber quarterbacks, elite pass rushers, and solid wide receiver cores. The LSU Tigers football team and head coach Brian Kelly will get their chance for revenge against the Florida State Seminoles on Sunday evening as they kick off the 2023 season. These two teams faced off in the first week of the season last year but special teams mistakes and a lack of offensive cohesion cost the Tigers the game. This year, LSU feels like a better, deeper, and more organized team. Starting quarterback Jayden Daniels even called this unit “night and day” different than the team he quarterbacked last year. But which position is going to have to step up the most in order for the Tigers to start the season 1-0, something they couldn’t do last year?

Florida State returns eight starters offensively, three of which are on their offensive line including All-ACC guard Dillon Gibbons. The Noles also return starting quarterback Jordan Travis who has led a balanced pass and ground attack. It will be key for LSU’s defensive line unit to affect Travis and force him into decisions he doesn’t want to make. That task is even more difficult with DT Maason Smith watching from the sidelines as he serves a one-game NCAA suspension, but the Tigers’ front seven returns LB Harold Perkins who is expected to be a top five player in college football this season.

What else is key for the Tigers to get a win against the Seminoles on Sunday night in Orlando? What does LSU need to do, and what does LSU have to avoid in order to start the season with a win?

LSU football opens up the 2023 season against the Florida State Seminoles on Labor Day Weekend. The Tigers seem to be a much improved team from the last time they took on the Noles in Week 1 of the 2022 season, but which unit does head coach Brian Kelly think is the MOST improved?

The Tigers head coach spoke to the media ahead of the kickoff of the season and broke down why this team is much more prepared for game one this season versus his first season on the job; depth, consistency, and experience at several different position groups and on special teams is at the forefront of Kelly’s confidence. But that depth, consistency, and experience will be on full display starting Sunday evening at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida as the Tigers travel to the Noles’ neck of the woods to start the season and where Kelly will try to prove to those that voted LSU as a preseason top-five team that they made the right evaluation of his football team.

LSU football has announced which players will wear the most legendary numbers within the history and tradition of the Tigers program. Historically, number 18 is given to the player that displays great leadership and personifies the principles and spirit of LSU football going back to Matt Mauck and his leadership for the 2003 team that brought LSU it’s first national title game in nearly fifty years. Most recently BJ Ojulari was given the honor and now it will go to defensive lineman Mekhi Wingo. Wingo has been a difference maker on the field since he transferred into the program from Missouri last season and has been just as much if not even more impactful as a leader in the locker room.

Number 7 on the other hand, the second of the two meaningful jersey numbers for the purple and gold, traditionally has gone to the teams best playmaker. Whether it was Patrick Peterson or Tyrann Mathieu who solidified LSU as DBU; or Leonard Fournette or DJ Chark who consistently made explosive plays offensively, that number has always gone to a skill position player. Until now. Sophomore offensive tackle Will Campbell will be the first lineman to ever wear the hallowed number in a shocking yet appropriate decision made by Brian Kelly and the coaching staff.

LSU football defensive tackle Maason Smith will not be available Week 1 vs. Florida State as he has been suspended for one game by the NCAA for receiving “impermissible benefits” stemming from a July 2021 autograph signing incident involving Smith and former LSU WR Kayshon Boutte. While “impermissible benefits” seems like a foreign term in the NIL era, the autograph signings occurred mere weeks before college athletes were able to benefit from the names, images, and likenesses.

So where does LSU go from here? LSU and the Florida State Seminoles enter this game very evenly matched: two Heisman-caliber quarterbacks with much improved offensive lines, standout defensive players and each team returns a hefty amount of production from last season. Also, each team has incredibly high expectations; they both enter this matchup as top-ten teams with College Football Playoff hopes. Football was back in Tiger Stadium over the weekend and even though it was just a scrimmage, the excitement was palpable on Saturday afternoon as a scrimmage indicates that college football is near. But what did we learn about the LSU Tigers over the weekend?

First, true freshman running back Kaleb Jackson stole the show. The four-star recruit from Baton Rouge flashed his size, speed, and elusiveness with two touchdowns on the day: one 18-yard TD run and another screen that Jackson turned into a 75-yard touchdown pass on 2nd and 15 after a false start penalty pushed the second team offense back. Jackson had a fantastic day and took advantage of his opportunity. So how does Brian Kelly and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock balance all eight running backs on the roster? Coach Kelly said experience would win out, but how can you ignore the day Jackson had on Saturday?

But the surprises didn’t end on the offensive side of the ball; junior Sage Ryan was taking first team snaps at cornerback in the scrimmage. Ryan has traditionally played safety and nickel but he and Southeastern Louisiana transfer Zy Alexander rolled with the first team defense. Can Ryan be a viable option there? Do the depth concerns at cornerback leave defensive coordinator Matt House with any option but to be creative and play Ryan at a position with which he has very little experience?
